At Delta Xi Chapter (Ball State University), there have been several
practices. In previous years, people would write down the name of
someone they thought was deserving - after all the pices of paper were
collected, whoever got the most "votes" was awarded the DSK.
While I was active, we changed the rules a bit, in part to recognize
the signifance of the DSK. Nominations are made one week by any
member. The person making the nomination writes up the official
nomination (and reasons why) for presentation at chapter the following
week. Having this week in between allows for multiple members to
collaborate on a single nomination if they wish - getting different
perspectives, etc.
That second week, the formal nomination is read to the chapter,
followed by discussion. The vote is by ballot and the advisors count
the ballots. It takes 3/4 to award a DSK. The advisors also take
care of ordering the DSK -t his way, the awarding of a DSK is a
surprise, not only to the member awarded but also to the Chapter. The
chapter has adopted a set of criteria for the DSK, which parallels the
criteria for the Section 52 DSK (substituting the word CHAPTER for
SECTION where applicable.) For a list of the criteria (and for all

There can be multiple nominations, and there is no limit to the number
of brothers who can receive a DSK. The rules of the Chapter permit
the DSK process to occur in the spring, but for extenuating
circumstances, they can award them in the fall if the rules are
suspended.
I think the following are the number of DSKs awarded at Delta Xi
Chapter in recent years:
1994 - 1995 3
1995 - 1996 3
1996 - 1997 1
1997 - 1998 0
The chapter takes the awarding of a DSK very seriously, and the debate
on any one nominee can go for hours. The debate is not limited in time.
