                NATIONAL PLEDGING STANDARDS
"3.The length of a pledging period. An appropriate period of pledging
should be not less than six weeks nor more than
ten weeks in duration.

Rationale: Pledge membership and the period of pledging must provide
adequate time for pledges to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to
function as active members of the Fraternity, and as officers of their
chapter, and to develop the commitment for continuing service throughout
their collegiate years and beyond. Pledgeship, whether as part of a
structured pledge class or through individual contracting, must provide
these opportunities but must not last for such a time period as to
interfere with other obligations of the pledges."

i don't agree that making them a neophyte is the answer though (although
it makes them not a pledge anymore) because our neophytes are voted in. as
in saying that they are deemed worthy of brotherhood, yet they have not
gone through the initiation ritual.

last year when i pledged (has it been that long ago already?) one of my
pledge brothers didn't quite make it. apparently she was going through
some personal problems (of which none of us really found out until she
quit-at pledge boards). The brotherhood already talked about giving her
extra time at the beginning of the next semester to fullfill some of the
requirements. and since our pledge program already is nine weeks, giving
her just one week to finish a great majory of the work that she didn't do
would not be realistic.

perhaps proposing a slight change to the National Pledging Standards in
saying something like..."nor more than ten weeks in duration
<<added part>>
"unless the pledge has not shown themselves to be in the fellowship of
principles derived from the Scout Oath and the Law of the Boys Scouts of
America. At which time it is up to the individual chapter, upon
consultation with their advisors and/or Sectional Liason, to deem a new
pledge period with proportionately no more activity than the pledge's
original pledge requirements."
