Not all colleges and universities handle summer sessions in the same way. And
there are times that may coincide. No matter what the debate one way or the
other might interfere with someone's plans. This is where planning comes into
play. It will be hard at first, but after 2 conventions membership in the
chapters will have overturned at least once, and by indications on this list,
perhaps two or three times.
A friend, colleague and mentor once said to me, "Change is not always better,
but in order to be better you need to change. You cannot be better by staying
the same."
As the amount of material we are dealing with continues to grow at the
convention (and I believe that it will continue to grow) and to do it justice
it is looking like we need to add another day to conference. (Marathon
meetings do nothing for anyone's personality, concentration, and attention.)
I think we will be more productive if the voting delegates get some real
sleep. These are things to think about and keep in mind.
In addition, when I was chair and was promoting the conference I would hear
that being sandwiched into the holidays is not the best plan. We must be
sensitive to the needs.
In addition NACURH holds their national conference the last weekend in May.
Traditionally not a time when people are in classes because colleges and
universities are finishing out the academic year files, inventories,
professional development sessions and so on. There are a few that have
classes that quick in May, but take it from a former res. life hall
director... It can take up to 2 weeks closing a building after the students
leave. Doing damage reporting, billing students, and turning the buildings
over to camps and conferences.
Again something to think about... Also no delayed flights because somewhere is
snowed in. Do not think that just because it has been the way it is done does
not mean that is the only way it can be done.
Just a thought.
