I bought an 8mm cleaning tape, used it on the tape drive, and was able
to complete most of the AFS backup. The only volumes not backed up
were project.clisp, project.tcshdev, and project.sipb.sun.

I bought the cleaning tape at Crimson Tech (it's labeled Sony Video
Head Cleaning Cassette V8-25CLH). It cost $10.50 and is supposedly
good for 200 cleanings. If SIPB wants to buy it from me, that'd be
great; otherwise, I'll keep it.

It wasn't clear to me how exactly to use the cleaning tape, since the
instructions talk about "play" and "stop" buttons, which we don't
have. If the tape is inserted, it will stay in for a little while
(about 20 seconds) and then eject. I was hoping that that did the
cleaning. Also, the directions say not to rewind, and I don't know if
that's possible with our tape drive.

I ran the cleaning tape once, labeled three new data tapes, and then
backed up the first volume set, which completed ok. I then tried to
back up the second volume set, but that failed with a tape I/O error.
After running the cleaning tape two more times, I went on to the third
volume set, which completed ok. I ran the cleaning tape one last time
and then went back to the second volume set (with a new tape) and it
failed again (in the same place, three volumes from the end).

... a bit more likely now, so I will try to swap some of those volumes
onto other partitions in exchange for .nb volumes to try to reduce the
total size of the volume set.
