The cleaning tapes we used in the past were simply inserted into the
drive, cleaned the heads for 20-30 seconds, and then automatically
ejected. So, it sounds like you used it properly. Unless the drive
rewinded it, that is. If the drive rewinds the tape, the next time
you try using it you will be reusing the dirtied portion, which won't
help; no cleaning tape will be usable more than once if the drive
always rewinds tapes. Did it look rewinded?
