Matt, I use the sony 12 pass cleaning tape.  You can use Exabytes, but it 
will cost you more money.  Sony makes the data and cleaning tapes for 
Exabyte.   I recommend not using a cleaning tape past its lifetime.  
This can cause you all sorts of problems.  (similar to the ones you are
having.)  If you need any more info let me know.  

P.S. clean your tape drive every 30hrs of continuous use or 
     every 30 gigabytes of data.
