No special kernel should be required for a 3c509, so I assume you
actually have a 3c590 or some such.
If you're using the kernel from
/mit/netbsd/dev/machine-specific/new-drivers, you should read the
README file in that directory, which explains how to ftp an
appropriate install kernel after you install but before you reboot.
Automatic support for this sort of thing is one of the items on my
list, but right now specialized install disks aren't supported
terribly well.
