when NetBSD boots, does it print out a message along the lines
of

ep0 at isa0 port 0x300-0x30f irq 10: 3Com 3C509 Ethernet
ep0: aui/bnc/utp address 00:20:af:73:1f:c8


(or ep1 or whatever?)
  if not, this may suggest that the kernel is not finding the card.
If the boot floppy managed to find it though, all hope is not lost,
we will need to figure out why it isn't getting to the network.
