The new kernel/installation disk did not work. :(

it "freezes":

....
real mem = 20578304
avail mem = 18239488
using 276 buffers containing 1130496 bytes of memory
isa0 (root)
-system halt-

At this point, the floppy drive light is on, but it doesn't
seem to be even spinning.

To diagnose the problem further I...
A. booted without the network card in the machine
result: it booted just seemingly just fine, without finding
    a network card, of course.
B. booted with the card set to port x300 irq 9 (changed port)
result: the card made it past the point when it was looking
for a network card (and didn't find the card), but halted
somewhere in the lines looking for different hard drives.
C. booted with the card set to port x340 irq 10 (changed irq)
result: it halted in exactly the same place.

My conclusion so far is that the port address is conflicting with
something else, or that my card isn't NE2000 compatible enough
to work correctly.

possible port addresses for my card:
0x300
0x320
0x340
0x360
possible irq's
3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15
