This is possibly afs bogosity.  -current kernels need a different
afs module than 1.3.2 kernels.  Also, you mentioned that you have a
"netbsd.new" kernel.  AFS will always lose if your kernel is not in
/netbsd.

Also, "workstation failed to mumble mumble..." is an indication of network 
absense.  Can you ping things?
