    (I have 1542CF as a hot-standby just in case at home.
    This worked with earlier linux/os2 for quite sometime. Too bad,
    the later kernel might not support 1542cf very well.)

I think also recent kernels support the 1542CF just as well
as old kernels. The 1542 is old and slow but generally works fine
on reliable hardware. Sometimes there are problems on a PCI board,
I don't know whether that would be the kernel's fault.
