Thanks a lot for your immediate help and advice. I meticulously tried
out all your hints, but finally it was similar to the sad experience of
Peter. So I changed the shape of my AHA1542CF slightly---with a 
hammer---that no future generations would run into the same problem with 
this particular controller specimen. Topic closed. The next one will be
a TEKRAM...
