As far as I know, the most stable drivers for the aic7890 were included
into the 2.1.125. Works great on my computer. As far as stability goes
I've heard the 2.1 kernel is close to going to a stable 2.2. (I could be
totally wrong on that.)
However, as long as you have a pretty much
vanilla system; by that I mean no SMP, experimental networking, weird
chipsets, or the like; you really should see about the same amount of
stability. (If I'm wrong I'm sure someone with vastly more
knowledge than I will correct me.) Granted, if you're running a business
or any other critical venture on you're machine then you really need
the stability.
Nothing is ever bug-free. Even a stable kernel isn't 100% stable.
I'd say to stick with the 2.1.125. It's got the latest aic7xxx drivers,
and if you feel uncomfortable about its development status just don't
compile the new and experimental features.
However, here's where you can find those patches if you want them:
ftp://ftp.dialnet.net/pub/linux/aic7xxx/
