I have no experience with Alpha-based systems, but the Tekram DC-390 U
(PCI to Fast-20 "Narrow Ultra" SCSI, Symbios SYM53C875 based, Linux
driver is NCR53C8XX) is quite cheap yet reilable for me, with an x86
machine; in contrast to an Adaptec 2842VL which has proven quite
unstable, especially with tagged command queueing. I've had no chance,
however, to verify these tagged command queueing (TCQ for short) issues
(Micropolis Tomahawk 4345WS failed with TCQ enabled at the Adaptec with
TCQ, but TCQ is fine with the Tekram) with the new 5.1.2+ driver versions
of AIC7XXX.
