hardware raid controllers supported?

Ok, I know this list is intended for development only. So please, respond
by private mail. Also, I don't need complex explanations, just URL
references or a short type number is fine. I already know the
HardwareHowto and Mike Neuffer's SCSI pages.
Problem: I need to configure a mission critical high availability linux
system. Using raid, hardware raid, is highly appreciated. The
Hardware-Howto lists a bunch of controllers. Alas, most are simply not
available in Germany. Mylex is well known here, and rumored to sell DPT
stuff. But I don't know any numbers.
The system should be rack-mounted, disks hot swappable. Ideally the
machine should be a Compaq.
Questions are: a) Can you recommand a certain RAID controller?
b) If the compaq has an internal, hot swappable, disk bay, can the
non-compaq, but linux supported controller use that bay?
b2) If not, is an external, rack mountable, hot swappable disk bay
available for the controller.
c) (This is probably the easiest solution), can you recommend a 'plain'
SCSI controller, external SCSI-2-SCSI Raid combo, which is rack
mountable, hot swappable and works nicely (can be configured through
serial line from linux) even w/o rebooting to something other than
linux (easy maintenance IS an issue for this machine).
ANY input is highly appreciated, Thx,
Michael.

any machine in the net, it's very likely it's me.
