Hi!

To my knowledge type 83 (Linux Native) IS the proper id to use when
creating and accessing the Second Extended File System (ext2).
Have You also tried to create the file-system using the mke2fs-utility?
(mke2fs /dev/sdb*) ex. mke2fs /dev/sdb1
The sdb-device is only a descriptor for the entire media; The number
(sdb[1->]) symbolizes which partition You would like to create a
filessystem on, or access for data-storage/retreival.
Using the dd-command in this case would only prepare the media for
access, creating and resetting all the sectors with zeros.
Only special devices like the floppy-drive is manipulated using the /dev/fd0
or /dev/fd1, in which case the number repersent which of You floppy-drives
You vould like to use.

Happy Hacking,
Henrik!
