problems with adaptec 2940 uw

Im trying to install linux red hat 5.1. The problem I am having is this.
In expert mode I can choose the adaptec 2940 uw and it finds it no
problem. But when it looks for the devices that are attached to it(2 hds
and one cd-rom) I just keeps timing out.
the msg it gives is something like
host 0 scsi id 0 channel 0 (pid1 or pid3) timed out. trying harder
bus reset host 0 scsi id 0 channel 0.
ect
If anyone can help me get this thing running. I would be very
apperciative.
