I had the same problem with AHA2940UW, RH5.0, and SDT7000.
I thought the tape drive was broken so I tested under NT where it
worked fine.
Plugged it back into the Linux box, changed my kernel to 2.1.105,
compiled with
Override driver defaults for commands per LUN: YES
Maximum number of commands per LUN: 36
I add here that the machine was Micron Powerdigm, 2 CPUs PPro 200Mhz,
and all the SCSI devices were connected on a single bus. Disabled wide
negociation for the tape. Eventually it worked. Yesterday other people
told me that he tried the same thing but the hangs still persisted.
