I had the same problem with my Adaptec 2940UW and SDT7000 tape.
In kernel configuration I set the following options:
Adaptec AIC7xxx support: Y
Override driver defaults for commands per LUN: Y
Maximum  number of commands per LUN: 36

Now, with my 2.1.105 everything works great.
