You cannot boot from a disk on a controller whose BIOS is disabled.

I got some information from:
Markus Kossmann <markus.kossmann@inka.de>

You can apparently configure modules that will be loaded by kerneld by
writing their parameters and other info to /etc/conf.modules.

The whole process is described in a file in the Linux kernel source
usually to be found at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt
