I have a Archive Python 24947 4mm DAT tape drive in a P200 with an
Adaptec 2940 SCSI host adaptor. This system also has a 2GB SCSI Segate
hard drive. I am running Linux 2.0.33, RH 4.2. The relavent boot messages
are below:

Ok, now for my problem. Randomly I have been having failures
during backups of the hard disk to the tape. Shortly after I first
installed the tape drive, everything was working fine, but more and more
often now, during full backups (approx 1GB), I am getting SCSI and tape
errors. On small backups (<20MB or so), everything works fine. It appears
to be less space related, and more time related, as if any errors occur,
they only occur after the backup has been running for 30 minutes. I am not
using new tapes, but instead used ones I am told work. Though I have tried
five different "used" tapes with the same results. The history of this
drive is unknown, including the last time it was cleaned.
	The errors thrown are below:
...
Raw sense data:0xf0 0x00 0x03 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x3c 0x0a 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x03

0x02 0x00 0x2a
st0: Error on flush.
...
These continue on for pages, and appear to be the same from start to
finish.
As an additional problem, I once tried to see what happened when
one fills up the tape, and then tries to keep writing. I expected some
time of out of space error. Instead, when the tape ran out I got a hard
scsi system crash, rendering the system useless. I don't have the error
messages, but I couldn't log in from the console or from the network. And
errors about trying to reset the SCSI bus, and then trying harder were
scrolling past on the screen.
Does anyone have any experience with this drive, or any ideas on
how to remedy these problems? Is this caused by a dirty tape drive (and
therefore needs cleaning), or is there a more serious failure at fault
here? Thanks for any help you can give me on getting this drive working
correctly.

PS. I am well aware of how highly thought of the Adaptec SCSI
cards are by the Linux community at large. :) It was not my choice, I was
given the system as is, and told to set it up, after asking for a system
with totally different specs (yes, I know this sounds a lot like a dilbert
cartoon!). Also, the HD works fine (a bit slow though) with the adaptec
scsi card, no problems at all!
