We have an HP T4000s tape drive which says "I/O Error" to every attempt to
use it. mt status works on it:
SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (40010000):
BOT IM_REP_EN
But nothing else does. I found a description of a similar problem in an
archive of a redhat mailing list:
http://archive.redhat.com//redhat-list/1996-September-5/0216.html
There the respondant said he solved the problem by upgrading the firmware.
However, the only firmware upgrade information I can find is all DOS-related.
Obviously, it is unacceptable to shut down a major server, and install DOS
(or any of its children) on it, just to run some lousy firmware upgrade
utility.
So my question: is there a good way to fix this problem, or are these drives
only good for toys?
