The AM53C974 driver is known to be instable, if you don't disable the
disconnection feature.
I'd suggest to use the native Tekram DC390 driver: tmscsim. It is included in
the 2.0.31 kernel distribution (and newer ones, of course). You can also
download it from Tekram's site or from
ftp://student.physik.uni-dortmund.de/pub/linux/kernel/
