I am using a Exabyte 8700 (EXB 8500, I think, but may be 8200),
with Linux 2.0.32, an Adaptec 2940, on a P100 with no problems. The tape
is seen on boot up, and from there works fine. One or two problems with
SCSI resets, but that maybe coming from the something else on the SCSI
chain. I am afraid I can't offer much help, other than it is possible.
Check the SCSI bus (termination and such, maybe a HD is terminated such
that the tape is getting dropped off the end of the SCSI bus), the kernel
(maybe downgrade) and the internal termination of the Adaptec card. For
the latter, make sure that the card is set explicitly to terminate or not,
don't set it to auto, it is not intelligent enough to work correctly in
that mode. Hope this helps.
