This is far more likely to be a hardware problem especially if you need to
do a hard reset.
The only message really specific to the ncr53c8xx driver is the "phase
change" message. The other 53c8xx messages appear to have their equivalents
in other drivers. There have been several similar posting regarding Buslogic
and Adaptec drivers in the resent past.
Apart from the normal things to check like terminators, cables, etc. really
wierd things can happen if the power connection to the drive is a bit flaky
especially if one of the ground connections is bad (my favorite).
