The Adaptect 3985W controller does not truly provide hardware RAID support. It supports multiple hardware channels, but the RAID functionality is still done in software (possibly on the card itself lending some credence to the hardware RAID claim, but that requires using the sequencer code from Adaptec, which you don't get under linux, instead you get our sequencer code under linux and it doesn't do any RAID magic on the controller). So, in short, if a true hardware solution is what you wnat, forget about the 3985 controllers and stick to the DPT.
