John, this sounds like the SCSI lockups I've had. Try playing around with
the BIOS setup params. I have an 1542CF, and have no problems accessing my
Wantek DAT. However, when I added an IBM 1Gig disk, I got lockups when
transfering between the disk and the DAT. In the end I found out that if I
switched off DISCONNECT to the disk, everything worked.
I talked to the company to supplied the disk, who in turn talked with
those that supplied the disk to them. They claimed that it was a bug
in the Adaptec controller(!).
So, try disallowing DISCONNECT to the disk, and see what happens.
Good luck,
Kai
