Have you ever checked if it is "just" the network device driver that
hangs?
You could check this by using a simple cron script that runs every
minute and pings two other hosts on the local network. If neither
of them respond, do a "ifconfig eth0 down" and bring it back up
again, don't forget to install all routes again (if any).
I've been experiencing this on one machine and shutting down and
restarting the network driver gets things going again most of the
time.
