3Com ethernet card not being detected

Hi:
We have installed 3Com 3C509B EtherLink III on Pentium 100 running
Linux (Slackware) . It seems that the kernel is not detecting
the ehternet card.
ifconfig eth0 gives error saying "no such interface"
While booting we get the following message
