thats TOTALLY untrue. Static IPs are #1 a waste of IP addresses (and that is
going to eventually catch up with us all as the net grows), #2 totally
pointless.. why (unless requested) give a user a static IP address if they
are just calling in ppp to web browse, and read email (which is what a good
80% of my users do).. there is no reason for them to know what ip address
they are on.
my point, I dont think static IP addressing is any indication of how
"serious" an ISP is. I dont have any specific stats, but I am sure more than
HALF of the big isp's use dynamic ip, simply because its #1 easier, #2
efficient, #3 less wasteful IP address wise, less database (i.e. if you are
using radius and want to give each customer a static ip, your radius users
file would be hellatious), just plain makes sense :)... I personally give
users static if they want it, otherwise they get dynamic. My theory is if
they dont know the difference, they dont need static, radiusd logs their IP
each time they call so I know who was on what IP when, so I can still track
abuse, etc.. so there is no real argument for your point.. sorry.. just my
$0.02....
