I have configured and installed the archie perl client and corresponding
man pages in the sipb locker.
The client version is: Prospero Beta.4.2 (Perl Archie Client Version 1.3)
(This is obtained by anonymous ftp to quiche.cs.mcgill.ca, in
archie/clients/perl-archie-3.8.tar.Z. Since this is distributed by a
major archie server site, it is likely to be in sync with the version of
the server.)
I have been using this client for a few months now, and believe it to be
both stable and superior to the other clients. It (like the other
clients) uses the Prospero protocol, which is recommend by (and often
enforced by) the main archie server maintainers. In particular, it is
better to use a Prospero client than to use telnet or rlogin...it is
faster, and puts less of a load on the archie servers.
I have installed it under the name "archie". I can be convinced to
change the name to "parchie" (for perl archie) if some conflict arises
from someone trying to get the C archie version. (A tty-based C archie
client and an X based client are available from the same site mentioned
earlier, but I don't like them very much, so I'll let someone else
deal.)
The programs will be available in the read-only volume whenever it gets
updated. I'm not sure about when now that the sipb locker is in the
sipb cell.
RTFM for more information. Enjoy!
