Distributed Computing & Network Services -- Development
                            Senior Systems Programmer
                            MIT Position No. 93-0186A

MIT's Information Systems group is looking for someone to lead a team of systems
programmers. This team is responsible for the operating systems, pieces of the
distributed computing infrastructure, as well as other services that run on more
than a thousand UNIX workstations and 200 servers on our campus.

The basic pieces of this environment were built during Project Athena. This
individual will be a key contributor as we evolve MIT's distributed computing
environment along several dimensions, for example, residential network services
and new models for administrative computing. Our customers include students,
faculty and administrators. We provide these customers with a variety of
services: communications tools of various kinds, information access tools,
courseware tools, to name just a few.

Primary responsibilities include:
* technical leadership and day-to-day supervision of systems programmers
* designing, implementing and maintaining distributed computing services.

Requirements:
* supervisory experience in a large-scale UNIX environment
* experience in TCP/IP networking technologies
* experience with distributed file systems, for example, NFS, AFS or DFS
* experience in software engineering techniques using C in UNIX BSD,
UNIX System V or POSIX environments.

This position involves a large amount of coordination and communication among
groups throughout Information Systems and MIT. The issues are often ambiguous,
or have political aspects to them, or have a combination of technical and
organizational uncertainty attached. Examples of successful interpersonal,
organizational, oral and written communications in resolving such issues are
essential. Familiarity with the needs of a university community is very
helpful.

We prefer candidates with a master's degree in computer science and 5 years of
relevant work experience. Candidates with some equivalent combination of
education and experience should also apply.

Apply by sending your resume and cover letter with salary requirements referencing Position No. 93-0186A to either:
