gcc is quite good.  gcc2, although still experimental, is quite good as
well, as far as I can tell.  The C compiler currently supplied with
SunOS 4.1 is not great, but you can use it to compile gcc, at least, and
then use that.

Chris Murphy tells me he's heard rumors that gcc will not work under
SunOS 5.0 -- however, I can't imagine that it would be very long before
that is corrected.

I don't think we need to be overly concerned about this issue.  If Sun
does not supply a C compiler, I'm sure it won't be long before you can
get the gcc binary off the net (if you can't already).

May I suggest taking this discussion off of this mailing list and onto
the "sparc" mailing list?  That list is archived in the "Sparcstation
Development" discuss meeting on menelaus -- short name "sparc".  In
discuss, "am menelaus:/usr/spool/discuss/sparc".
