The balance point of when to run local software versus vendor software
is one I'm always investigating.
I have the following tid-bits from the recent Sun User's group meeting:
Not only will no compiler come with SunOS 5.0, but the unbundled Sun
(excuse me, SunSoft) compilers will enforce their licenses. Typically,
there will be a floating license server and one will be able to check out a
compiler (for a minimum of 30 minutes, or so) for use on a particular
machine.
If you are really tired of SunOS, though, you will be glad to know that
the BSD 4.4 distribution will include a port to Sun SPARCstations (done
by certified wizards Torek and Van Jacobson of LBL).
So there are emerging a PLETHORA of choices, even for the Sun.
Up until now, SunOS was the only "vendor supported" version of UNIX I
had anything good to say about. I'm nervous about the direction Solaris
is taking, but I have a great deal of confidence in stuff written by Van
Jacobson.
