Hello, everyone -

Debathena development has been busy over the past two months, due in no
small part to the collaboration between the SIPB project and the IS&T
Athena team. In March the IS&T Athena 10 project and the SIPB Debathena
project merged, pooling personnel and other resources; the next version
of Athena will be called Debathena. These changes brought a lot of new
features, so we figure we should keep you all up to date. We're going
to aim to send every month or two a digest of changes you'll see as a
Debathena user.

Debathena in clusters:
The big news is that Debathena on Ubuntu Intrepid is running in parts of
the W20, 12, 56, and 66 clusters. The beta deployment is supported by
IS&T, and we're planning for full deployment by the end of the summer.
See <http://debathena.mit.edu/cluster> for details.

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty and Debian Squeeze:
In early March, we added support for Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, which
was released last week, and experimental support for Squeeze, the Debian
release currently under development.

Debathena Live CD:
We now offer an experimental version of the Intrepid desktop
live/install CD with Debathena at
<http://debathena.mit.edu/experimental#livecd>.

More mail clients configured:
The new packages debathena-mutt-config and debathena-thunderbird-config
configure those mail clients to work with the MIT mail system by
default. With debathena-thunderbird-config, the local Thunderbird on
Debathena systems should be compatible with the locker version available
for previous Athena releases.

Smoother Ubuntu upgrades:
Thanks to help from Ubuntu, the new debathena-upgrade-config package
will permit smooth Debathena upgrades from Ubuntu Intrepid to Jaunty and
future releases.

TeX paper size:
TeX and LaTeX on the Debathena cluster workstations now default to
letter instead of A4 paper. To configure this on your own system,
install debathena-tex-config.

This e-mail can only scratch the surface of the work done over the past
few months. If you're interested in learning more about what has
changed, you can see our stream of recently closed tickets at
<http://debathena.mit.edu/trac/wiki/RecentlyClosedTickets>. You can also
see our current roadmap for future development at
<http://debathena.mit.edu/trac/roadmap>.

As always, many features are still new and under development. Feel free
to contact us at <debathena@mit.edu> with any questions, comments or
suggestions.

- Evan
