I saw email about a panic problem and remedy in the openafs-devel  
list, but I've not yet read the thread carefully.  I believe it's  
relevant, and Jeff Altman, when I mentioned we had a panic heisenbug  
said to try 1.4.3-rc2 when it is released.

I'll update release-team when I've read the thread carefully.
