I have read the thread carefully.

Several times.

And now my head hurts, but I think I understand the situation. The
understanding of how to do clien-side byte range locking under Linux
is still evolving. A couple times they thought they had it sorted
out. One of those times it actually created a situation where the
kernel would panic. (This is likely what panic'de the kernel on our
1.4.2 Linux systems.)

They decided to take client side byte range locking off the 1.4.3
feature list.

So they backed out the code that was causing the panic, but also
backed out the code that would do the byte range locking. This means
we can take 1.4.3 when it comes out for Linux with some confidence
that it won't panic where 1.4.2 did. But it also means we should not
expect a fix for locking.
