I'm sorry you were inconvenienced by this bad behavior.

The symptoms you describe sound like a somewhat rare RPM problem we've
been trying unsuccessfully to get Red Hat to look into for some time,
but that may be merely a superficial resemblance.

I was going to suggest that you got bit by two different problems: 1.
The rare RPM problem (whose remedy is a re-install) followed by 2. A
system hangup that causes systems to hang rather than completing a
graceful shutdown and reboot (like one would do to finish an update).

But you're saying that the network driver is missing.

How old is your system? I wonder if the network card got de-supported
in RHEL 4, and that funky things happened across the update to RHEL 4
as part of the Athena 9.4 update.

Perhaps I can prevail upon someone to trek out to your system and do
some more careful diagnosis. (I could try doing so myself, but I've not
got the deep Linux clue these days that is often necessary in these
cases.)
