I note that telharmonium is running XFree 3.x (because it was installed
at 8.4 and upgraded), while astrophel is running XFree86 4.2.0. But
that may not be the proximal issue; the issue might be with the font
path.

On both telharmonium and astrophel (locally; what matters is the
display), log in with a test account and run "xset q | grep -A 1 'Font
Path'" to get the X server's font path. One of the entries will be
"unix/:7100", which means "go talk to the font server", so we also need
to know the value of "catalogue" in /etc/X11/fs/config on both machines.
