Can we get further technical information from the BioSym people about the
nature of the problem, and why the workaround apparently works?  Is the
fact that the problem occurs on non-XZ graphics machines consistent
with their analysis of the problem?  Until then, or unless we see other
application problems on non-XZ machines, I'd be a bit hesitant to call it
an SGI problem.
