I just wanted to share a big THANK YOU with you for giving us such a clear
update log in "/var/athena/update.log". Bravo!
I manage a "private" Athena workstation for the MIT Libraries which (among
other things) serves the Dibner Institute's Burndy Library catalog on the
web. The staff person who set up this web interface (and is no longer at
MIT) did not take the workstation off the automatic updates, so I arrived
yesterday to a no-longer-function web interface.
I fumbled around yesterday contemplating the difficult fix awaiting me,
since I know next-to-nothing about the software involved. This morning I
tried another approach: look for hints from Athena. Sure enough, with a bit
of guidance from your web pages and a few seconds of hunting through /var I
found the update log. Even better, the log started with some plain language
hints that saved the day. All I had to do was compare the preserved ".old"
files for inetd.conf and services to the new versions and I found the few
lines I had to put back in place. Reboot, and voila!
Thanks again for a job well done.
