I'm having problems taking the 8.1 release on donald.mit.edu

donald is an R4600 sgi with XZ graphics.

I logged out this morning (I was logged in from last night and donald was
running 8.0). After that donald tried to take the update, but evidently it
did not take correctly. I rebooted a few times, but now when I try to log
in as mbwall I get the "this workstation failed to activate successfully"
message. Same message if I try to log in as root.

The console pops up occasionally with messages about "you are not allowed
to attach a filesystem here" and "srvd/auto-update: Not Found"

the machine was/is configured to take updates automatically. however, now
I cannot log in at all (even as root) to see what's going on with the
machine.

Is there a procedure I can use to wipe the machine and start from scratch?
Or do you want to debug this thing to figure out why it is not taking the
update?
