Software Foundation

Dear OSF Member,
We are asking for your participation in the formation of
the new Common Desktop Environment/Motif Pre-Structured
Technology (PST), either as a provider of feedback
and/or as an End User Steering committee representative
to the project steering committee.
As you know, OSF is transitioning to a new project
facilitation model for future technology development. A
number of sponsors are now preparing to use OSF's new
PST process, to coordinate the evolution of Motif and
the CDE technologies.
The CDE/Motif PST authoring group and the End User
Steering Committee request that you identify the
appropriate contacts in your companies who may be
available for input and review of important elements of
this CDE/Motif project as it is formulated.
A PST proposal is now being authored by this group. Once
it is drafted, it will enter a formal review/approval
phase during which your feedback is especially critical.
After OSF board approval of the project, the OSF member
contacts you provide will continue to be kept informed
about the project status. There may also be, from time
to time during the authoring phase, points upon which
member input would be valuable.
It is important to this new process that individuals
within the OSF Membership are identified who can
represent your views from a user and/or developer
perspective in the desktop and user interface toolkit
areas. We plan to begin a series of interactive
discussions on a variety of topics that will help the
project sponsors, the project prime contractor,
and OSF plan the new releases of these important
technologies. We will be including the User Environment
Component (UEC) SIG contacts in these discussions, but
we would also like to expand beyond the SIG to offer as
many OSF Members as possible the opportunity to actively
participate in this process.
In addition, we are seeking an end user member
representative for the Project Steering Committee.
Involvement will require weekly conference calls and
occasional travel. This person will work with the End
User Steering Committee in order to provide a
representative view of end user business and technical
requirements. During the PST authoring phase, this
individual will play a key role in reflecting a user
perspective to the authoring group of sponsors during
their data gathering. Later, when the official Steering
Committee is formalized, the representative will become
a regular member of the committee. Please indicate your
interest in the Project Steering Committee role by
sending email to ted@umich.edu.
Material for member feedback to the CDE/Motif PST will
begin to be circulated in the coming weeks. For
example, soon there will be issued a summary of
Motif-CDE convergence issues that were discussed at the
recent UEC SIG meeting.
OSF will be facilitating the member review process.
Please email your contacts to Lorraine Burrage at
burrage@osf.org or fax them to her at:617-621-0584 as
soon as possible. Include:

is no need to send this contact information unless you'd
like to confirm or update it.
Thank you. We look forward to a productive partnership
between project sponsors and OSF Members that will help
make the CDE/Motif PST a success.
