Executive Summary
<><><><><><><><><>

* OSF held its twelfth Members Meeting on May 24 - 26,
1994. This meeting marked several "firsts" for OSF: this
was our first Members Meeting held in Brussels, and also
the first Members Meeting since the expansion of OSF's
sponsor ranks and the introduction of OSF's new
organizational structure and business model, as
announced this past March.

In fact, the new organizational structure, business
model and technology processes were a primary focus of
the meeting. The first day's plenary agenda featured a
panel in which OSF CEO David Tory and Larry Weber of
SunSoft explained OSF's new operational structure, and,
with representatives of OSF's End User Forum Steering
Committee and OSF's executive sponsors, including AT&T
Global Information Solutions, Digital, Fujitsu, Hewlett
Packard, Hitachi, IBM, and Novell, answered members'
questions about the changes being implemented at OSF.

Some other areas of keen interest among attending
members were the progress of DCE, relative to both
product availability and deployment, and the activities
of the international End User Forum. These topics
were addressed in a variety of updates and well-
attended, interactive discussion sessions during the
three days of the meeting.

Over 60 member organizations from more than a dozen
countries worldwide were represented by the 240+ meeting
attendees. A sizeable percentage of the attendees came
from Europe, and many attendees were participating in
an OSF member meeting for the first time. Response to
the meeting from member attendees was very positive.

Member companies who were not able to participate in the
Brussels meeting will be receiving a full kit of the
meeting hand-out materials within the next few weeks. We
encourage all members to distribute member meeting
materials freely within your own organizations.

Many thanks to all of you who participated for helping
to make this a very successful meeting. We hope to see
all of you, as well as those of you who weren't able to
join us this year, at the next Annual OSF Members
Meeting!

* The End User Forum and Steering Committee had
considerable visibility at the recent Brussels member
meeting, and formalized the evolving role of the user
constituency in the new organization and process of OSF,
including representation on development and review
committees and interaction with the Board of Directors
and OSF management.

OSF Announces General Availability
of DME Network Management Option 1.0

The Open Software Foundation has announced the general
availability of its Distributed Management Environment
(DME) Network Management Option (NMO) 1.0 technology.
The second component of DME, the NMO provides a common,
vendor-neutral platform to access network management
services.

The NMO provides technology for applications that need
to access the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
and the Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP) to
manage network devices. It consists of the XMP
application programming interface (API) which has been
standardized by X/Open, as well as other communication
tools. The NMO is a valuable enhancement to existing
network management frameworks and can be easily
integrated.

"We congratulate OSF on delivery of the NMO," stated
Bruce Murrill, Technical Director of the Network
Management Forum. "The NMO code will help product
developers implement an OMNIPoint Communications
Platform and give users a greater likelihood of
interoperability between systems, and portability of
applications."

The underlying technologies that were selected by OSF
come from Bull S.A. (Bull), Hewlett-Packard (HP), and
Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme (SNI). Bull, a
major technology provider, was chosen as the prime
integrator for NMO and also supplied the XMP technology.

According to Integrated System Management (ISM) Product
Line Director, Jean-Marie Leduc, "Bull fully supports
the OSF announcement as NMO will speed up the
development of portable, interoperable management
solutions. Our ISM already includes the necessary
capabilities to enable the smooth integration of NMO."

"The technology found in the NMO is used in the OpenView
Distributed Management Platform Version 4.0 and is a
high priority with many OpenView customers, particularly
those in the telecommunications industry," said Robert
Hoog, general manager of HP's Network and System
Management Division. "We applaud OSF's success in
delivering this crucial enabling technology."

SNI did the engineering work necessary to integrate the
CMIP support with the OSI upper layers and the X.500
Naming Service from OSF's Distributed Computing
Environment (DCE). "SNI understands the need for a
common management capability across vendor platforms and
supports OSF in the introduction of the NMO technology
designed to address this need," said Dr. Joerg
Gonschorek, Director of SNI's department for Network and
Systems Management.

The DME NMO 1.0 source code may be licensed for
$120,000, which allows full distribution for binary
products. There is also a limited distribution license
option which is intended for internal use only,
available for $12,000.

OSF Announces the Availability of
Micro-kernel Based OSF/1 Operating System

CAMBRIDGE, MA June 15, 1994 -- The Open Software
Foundation today announced the availability of Release
1.3 of the OSF/1 Operating System, the next generation
of standards-based micro-kernel operating system
technology. This release is conformant with the current
draft of Specification 1170, which is being considered
for standardization in X/Open's Fast Track process.

"This is a major step forward in the evolution of
commercially available, open operating system
technology," according to Susan Kegel, Director of OSF/1
Technology. "The advantage of the micro-kernel design
is that the operating system is more scalable, flexible,
portable, and maintainable than traditional integrated
kernel operating systems."

For the past several years, OSF has been working,
together with its Research Institute, on advanced
research and development of the micro-kernel technology,
isolating the essential core components of the kernel
and placing them in the most privileged state of the
computer. The remainder of the system, also known as the
operating system 'personality', now runs as an
application in non-privileged user space.

Ira Goldstein, Vice President of the OSF Research
Institute, points out that, "As the industry evolves to
more sophisticated hardware designs, the micro-kernel
technology provides simplicity and cost efficiencies
for manufacturers to develop scalable, standards-based,
open operating systems."

"With this in mind, the OSF Research Institute is
working on the evolution of the micro-kernel to address
massively parallel systems, cluster technology, real-
time environments, trusted computing, and multiple
operating system personalities," continued Goldstein.

The micro-kernel based system retains approximately 97%
of the code comprising the OSF/1 commands and libraries
and the traditional UNIX services. In addition, OSF/1
Release 1.3 retains its strong adherence to industry
standards such as X/Open, POSIX and ANSI.

New features added in OSF/1 Release 1.3 include a Data
Capture Interface (DCI), Common Data Link Interface
(CDLI) and 64-bit support.

The Data Capture Interface is an enabling technology
which provides a framework for gathering information on
system performance. This framework can be used by
applications and tools that use system performance
information for system tuning, capacity planning, and
system management. System vendors and ISVs need only
develop front end applications to use DCI, which is also
under consideration for standardization by X/Open.

CDLI is a kernel interface for network device drivers,
the system level code that manages and controls the
system's interaction with it's devices, such as disk
drives, printers, and CD-ROMs. CDLI allows for
device and resource sharing, code commonalty and code
and device driver porting, and has received the
unanimous endorsement of the OSF networking special
interest group.

End User Forum Activity
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The End User Forum Steering Committee met in a strategy
planning session for the two days prior to the Members
Meeting to discuss the current state of the OSF
restructuring and action plans for 1994. We will
distribute minutes from that session shortly. Topics
covered in the strategy session included how to recruit
end user representation on the new Project Steering
Committees for each OSF technology, how to provide a
more structured requirements gathering process for the
Project Steering Committees and the new Architecture
Planning Council, and how to increase communication both
within the end user membership and with other OSF
constituencies.

The Member Meeting itself was seen as the launch of the
restructured OSF processes. A survey distributed by the
Steering Committee at the meeting indicated positive
feedback about the announced changes. End users
responded that they feel the changes should bring about
greater industry cooperation and deliver business
benefit. One of the high points of the meeting was the
end user presentations on implementing DCE. End Users
have certainly moved from the "what is it?" phase to
"here's how it works for us". The content and
interactions in those sessions were valued highly.

Upcoming plans include a Regional End User Forum on the
30th of June in Tokyo, discussions with X/Open's User
Council on jointly sponsored activities, a communication
campaign to articulate open systems imperatives to end
users and vendors alike, and interaction with the new
vendor board members to get a better understanding of
their planned involvement in the restructured OSF.

To strengthen the communication between end users and
the OSF Board of Directors, Ted Hanss was elected at the
last OSF Board meeting to be the alternate At-large
Director. Ted joins the At-large Director, Joseph De
Feo, CIO of Barclays Bank, in representing the end user
voice at OSF board meetings.

Any comments or questions should be directed to Ted
Hanss, Chair, End User Forum Steering Committee at
ted@umich.edu (phone: +1 313 763-6185, FAX: +1 313 763-
4434).

Reminder: Please register your email address with Jane
Smeloff (jane@osf.org) in order to get mailings to the
end user membership. We want to get that mailing list to
a critical mass so we can begin to use it more
effectively.

DME NMO 1.0 General Availability

OSF recently announced the general availability (GA) of
the DME Network Management Option (NMO) 1.0 technology
at its Member Meeting in Brussels, Belgium on May 24,
1994. The NMO is the second phase of DME technology to
be released. The first phase, the DME Services 1.0, were
shipped late last year.

The NMO provides a common, vendor-neutral platform to
access network management services. XMP, X/Open's
Management Protocol, is provided as a standard portable
application programming interface (API) to access
industry protocols, such as the Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) and Common Management
Information Protocol (CMIP) for network management.

Telecommunications Workshop, May 25

The Telecommunications workshop at the Brussels Member
Meeting was a very full day, starting with Bruce
Murrill's (NMF) overview of how NMO fit into the
OMNIpoint framework, continuing with Bill Pope's (OSF)
overview of NMO, and finishing with the duel panel of
Telecom service providers and vendors: Tony Richardson,
British Telecom; Marco Dughera, CSELT-SIP; Akihiro
Takagi, NTT; Kari-Matti Varanki, Nokia; Paul Miller,
Bull; Larry Robinson, HP; Steve Bateman, IBM.

There were over 60 people in attendance from over 30
companies, and 54 signed up to receive the additional
presentation materials from the panelists. The question
and answer session was very lively, and it showed a
great deal of interest from all parts of the industry in
the NMO technology. In addition to questions specific to
NMO, there were a number of general DME questions
concerning the initial scope of DME and how the offering
had changed over the years. The afternoon service
provider/ vendor panel raised important concerns and
requirements for discussion. The group was interested in
follow-on communication, which will take place in the
DCE/Management SIG.

Telecommunications Pre-Structured Technology (PST)
Meeting, May 25

Directly following the Telecom Workshop was a meeting to
discuss possible ways in which the Telecom community
could participate in the Management PST activities.
Elizabeth Connelly (OSF) gave an overview of the PST
process and the roles of OSF, sponsors, and members in
this process. She mentioned that the first meeting of
the Architecture Planning Council was scheduled for June
14th and 15th at OSF, which would take the first steps
to arrive at a Roadmap for PSTs, a shared architectural
vision for the IT community to reference in creating
PSTs.

Doug Johnson, of HP, gave a brief overview of the
"former COSE" group and their work in the system
management area, stating that there will be more to
report when the group completes its negotiations at the
end of the summer.

As for network management, the areas discussed for a
possible PST were additions to NMO version 1.0,
including an XMP Common Application Environment, SNMP
v2, additional event processing, general defect fixing,
performance tuning, and code cleanup, as well as
improving the XMP and GDMO development environments with
items such as an XMP convenience API, a MIB browser, and
debugging tools. Telecommunications companies were urged
to consider banding together as associate sponsors,
which would enable them to participate in Management PST
development and execution.

Update on the Calvin Project

The Calvin team delivered on June 10 baseline 9 which
contained approximately 6,000 assertions. In addition,
XCUT delivered the Alpha release to X/Open to be
distributed to its membership. XCUT is 3 times
the assertions of PCTS and twice the assertions of
X/Open's VSX test suite. The majority of XCUT code was
delivered by the Calvin project. Congratulations are in
order to the Calvin team for reaching this milestone.

If you are interested in sponsoring a testing PST, send
e-mail to Calvin-mgmt@osf.org or call Greg Depp at 617-
621-7304.

Possible Future PSTs

In order to continue the evolution of the success that
OSF has had to date, we must look to possible future
PSTs that can enhance the OSF/1 technology. Some member
companies have suggested the following as possible
future PSTs:

     - Complete code base for Specification 1170 and
       future evolution of this specification.
     - Common code base for cmds/libs
     - Test projects
           - Calvin test project
           - generalized test framework
           - MACH interface test suite
           - MACH interface specification
             completion and evolution

If you are interested in sponsoring or need further
clarification of these possible future PSTs, please
contact Ellen Patton at 617-621-8834 or ellen@osf.org.

OSF RI to Develop Microkernel Test Suite

The OSF Research Institute has received a contract award
that allows the RI to collaborate with Computational
Logic Inc. (CLI) to develop technology for testing the
Mach microkernel for compliance with a formal
specification. CLI is developing a formal specification
of the Mach microkernel interface for the U.S.
government. The Research Institute will work to develop
cost-effective techniques for testing microkernel
compliance with the specification. The goal is to assure
that the formally proved properties of the specification
accurately describe the behavior of the implemented
system.

Under this contract, the RI will do research to develop
a methodology for testing code against formal
specifications. The research will include a comparison
of the costs of testing code against formal
specifications vs. testing through full formal proofs.
It will also compare the effectiveness of testing based
on mathematically precise specifications vs. testing not
based on mathematically precise specifications. The RI
will deliver a test suite to CLI for use in testing the
OSF Mach microkernel implementation against CLI's formal
specification.

OSF Research Institute Advances Microkernel
Performance Characteristics

The Research Institute has been involved in a very
focused program to close the gap between microkernel
based system and integrated kernels. Microkernel
technology has many highly desirable characteristics
that result in improved OS software engineering
through modularity, support for multiple OS
personalities, and network transparency. However, this
has not come without some cost in overall system
performance.

The RI announced at its April 1994 Symposium had
significantly reduced the performance penalty of
microkernel based system through the use of a minor
optimizations and a short circuited RPC service
when user space programs are collocated into the kernel
address space. This architectural change preserves the
microkernel architectural benefits while imposing
minimal performance impact. The RI noted that their
preliminary performance data was within a few
percent of a comparable integrated kernel. Additional
work continues with the objective of further reduction.

Additional details are available in the RI paper,
"Microkernel Modularity with Integrated Kernel
Performance".

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><
High Performance Computing
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><

Contracts

ARPA has recently notified the RI that two additional
proposals submitted under ARPA BAA 94-03 and BAA 94-08
will be funded later this year. One thrust focuses on
applying distributed High Performance Computing (HPC)
technology to embedded systems. OSF RI will develop a
configurable kernel that can be specialized to provide
just the required services needed on computing elements
with specialized function. Within this program, the RI
will work jointly with Honeywell Space Systems of
Clearwater, FL, to develop a highly configurable, OSF/1
AD compatible operating system for the Embedded
Touchstone, which is a militarized version of Intel's
massively parallel Paragon supercomputer.

The second area is fault-tolerance within mission-
critical HPC systems. The RI will continue its
development of fundamental fault tolerant mechanisms.
Particular tasks include making remote messaging (IPC
and RPC) robust in the presence of various failures and
anomalies, and developing a checkpoint/restart mechanism
applicable to embedded and other computing environments.

Architecture Neutral Distribution Format (ANDF)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

ANDF Academic Research Distribution Contract

The OSF RI has been selected by DRA (Defense Research
Agency) to serve as the distribution channel for the TDF
(aka ANDF) technology to the international research and
academic communities. The RI will provide both
distribution and support service, in order to enable
full and independent assessment of the attributes and
capabilities of DRA's TDF software technology. The OSF
RI is also investigating the inclusion of other ANDF-
related technologies which would complement the TDF
technology.

ANDF Research Kit

The ANDF Research Kit contains both the TDF technology
from DRA and the GANDF technology developed by the OSF
RI. The GANDF technology is a family of ANDF installers
which utilize the GCC code generators. The original
GANDF implementation utilized DRA-supplied technology to
transform the ANDF file format into an in-memory
representation. The new GANDF implementation has been
re-engineered so that it does not contain any DRA
proprietary code. In addition, much of the new
implementation is automatically generated from an
abstract description of ANDF, based on the
specification, so it should be a straightforward
process to upgrade GANDF to the latest ANDF
specification when it is approved (it is currently a
working draft).

The purpose of the ANDF Research kit is to understand
the use of the ANDF technology: a. for software
distribution (the original ANDF objective) b. for
developing and testing portable software (the ANDF
technology requires conformance to API specifications,
so it also serves as a good portability checker)
c. as a compiler kit (a baseline for developing a
compiler family).

Hewlett Packard has provided supplemental funding to the
DRA contract to help in the creation and dissemination
of the ANDF Research Kit, including the GANDF
technology.

Due to the proprietary nature of this software, an ANDF
Cooperative Research Agreement must be signed prior to
receiving the software.

The ANDF Research Kit pricing is based on the type of
organization. The Kit is for non-commercial usage only.

The pricing is as follows:
    OSF Members: $ 500.00
    Non-Members: $1000.00
    Universities: $ 200.00

These fees are principally to offset the cost of
preparation and distribution of the kit materials, plus
the administration of the ANDF Cooperative Research
Agreements.

ANDF Information and Documentation

There is now an ANDF home page located on the OSF RI
World Wide Web server
(http://riwww.osf.org:8001/ri/andf.papers/ANDF_intro.htm
l). Here you will find a brief overview of ANDF, along
with pointers to a collection of ANDF-related papers
which may be either viewed on-line or printed. All of
the papers from the "ANDF Technology Collected Papers"
series (currently four volumes) are contained on the
server.

For those who are not Mosaic users, the ANDF papers may
also be obtained from the OSF RI anonymous FTP server
(ftp:riftp.osf.org) in the directory
pub/andf_coll_papers. Requests for ANDF information may
be sent to andf-tech-request@osf.org.
