Welcome to the second edition of the Open Software
Foundation's CUSTOMER SERVICE NEWSLETTER. This electronic
bulletin is sent to you on a bi-monthly basis and contains
synopses of the latest events in OSF's Educational,
Professional, and Systems Engineering organizations. Also
included are the public training schedules for both OSF and
our Business Partners worldwide!

             ***EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICES***

As OSF members, you represent a cross-section of the
industry: end users, ISVs, vendors, research entities, and
government agencies. Through our interactions with you, we
at OSF have come to understand the difficulties involved in
your transition to new information technology paradigms. Out
of these experiences and discussions have evolved our simple
definition of open systems: the ability to use what you
have, buy what you need, and have it all work together. It's
investment protection, achieved by using standards-based,
vendor-neutral solutions.

OSF's Professional and Educational Services can help you
evolve your current IT infrastructure based on firm technical
direction. We can help you modify your existing architecture
to include open client-server systems. Sort through
standards. Train your IT staff in the latest open systems
technologies. Build a realistic and timely architecture
migration plan. Be part of your pilot development team.
Ensure that your migration is done on time, and to
specification. And provide our expertise within a
"technology transfer" framework: we work alongside your
people -- as a team; they learn as they watch and help us
complete the work.

If you are interested in OSF's assistance in helping you
evaluate the educational and technological means to achieve
your business goals, call for more information:

OSF Professional Services announces a new consulting
offering, the Distributed Security Consulting Program. A
suite of services that comprise a complete plan for
integrating DCE security into a distributed
computing environment, the Distributed Security Consulting
Program services range from a high level distributed security
architecture to technical design to detailed policies and
procedures.

The program is delivered in two phases. The first phase
includes: a) an introduction to the DCE security features in
a half day overview and; b) a report on how these features
apply to the client's environment. This relatively brief
phase is offered at a fixed fee.

The second phase offers a detailed architecture and
implementation plan for integrating DCE security features in
the client technology environment. This phase includes the
following deliverables, each of which is built specifically
for the client:

  - DCE Security Conceptual Framework
  - DCE Security Policies
  - Technical Design for DCE Security
  - DCE Security Procedures

After Phase One, a tailored Phase Two proposal (including
fees), is submitted to the client.

For more information on the above, contact Richard Martin,
Manager, OSF Professional Services at 617-621-7247; email:
<rfm@osf.org>.

The OSF Professional Services European branch is involved in
several large DCE pilot projects, mainly in the financial
arena. To this end they are providing consulting services
with emphasis on security issues. The Brussels office
supports the set-up of DCE cells and prototypes, and provides
advice on the design of the distributed applications.

For more information on the European Professional Service
offerings, contact Yair Melamud, Director of Customer
Services, at: +32 2 772 8888; email:<ym@osf.org>

OSF Educational Services
*************************************************************

Pre-development participants in the following program will
receive materials at *lower* prices than those available
after development begins:

***DCE 1.1 Localization (L10N) Development Program***

OSF is initiating the development of localized (translated)
material for DCE 1.1. The material under consideration
includes the following DCE 1.1 related software and
documentation components:

  - Message Catalogs
  - Glossary of Terms
  - User's Guide and Reference
  - Administration Reference

The following languages are being considered for the
localization development program:
  - French
  - German
  - Italian
  - Japanese
  - Spanish

The goals of the program are:
  - consistency of translations across diverse platforms
  - high quality, accurate translations
  - timely delivery relative to DCE 1.1 release date
  - cost savings for each participant
  - integration of L10N materials with each participant's
		DCE 1.1 source code license

OSF will provide the program management for the localization
development program and will be responsible for identifying
and contracting an organization(s) to translate the material.
OSF will specify the development of tests to be used by the
translator to ensure high quality and consistency. Program
participants will be encouraged to review and comment on the
localized material at regular intervals throughout its
development.

The localized materials will be delivered within ninety days
of the DCE 1.1 ship date. Program participants will receive
materials at substantially lower prices than those available
after development begins. Use of the localized materials
will be governed exclusively by each participant's DCE 1.1
source code license. No additional binary royalties will
result from use of the localized materials. Localized
materials will be provided on a non-exclusive basis.

In order to guarantee participants flexibility within the
localization development program, companies choosing to
participate will be allowed to select, at their option, only
those components of the program that are of value to them.
Given the economies of scale in larger development programs,
companies electing to participate in the development of all
components in all languages will pay the lowest per unit
cost. Individual components, although they may represent a
lower total cost, will necessarily be developed at higher
unit prices. (It should be noted that the development pricing
of all or any portion of the components represents a fraction
of the initial estimates for the development of localized
materials. Based on original estimates, a minimum of five of
each component must be of interest to participants before
localization of that component can proceed.)

Please keep in mind that the pricing quoted is based on
estimated DCE 1.1 word counts. The final price, which will
be announced after the development proposals are received and
a contractor is chosen, may vary slightly. Our goal will be
to reduce the cost of development consistent with our quality
standards and pass any savings along to program participants.
Prices for any component purchased after development has
started will be considerably higher than the original pre-
development price model. Below is a brief description of the
pricing/purchasing options available to your company:

  - Any single component, software or documentation, may be
purchased individually.

  - Same language software and documentation components may
be purchased as a set with a reduced per unit price as
compared with the individual component price.

  - All software components or all documentation components
may be purchased in a group with a lower per unit price than
that of the individual components or the same language sets.

  - The full set of components, five software and five
documentation, can be purchased at a price lower than the sum
of the software and documentation components or the sum of
all same language components.

DCE University Support:
We are proud to announce the availability of the DCE
University Support Program. This program includes:

  Access to the electronic archives
  Defect reporting
Eligibility for participation in the 1.1 beta program

This new program takes the place of the DCE Update Support
program and all degree-granting institutions are eligible to
participate.

DCE Beta Program:
DCE Beta program is scheduled for May. Both full support and
university DCE support customers are eligible to participate.
Early access means ability to view new features and
functionality. In return for this early access source code,
participants must agree to frequent and high level usage of
the beta software and to log any problems which they may
encounter.

DCE 1.0.3a:
DCE 1.0.3a was made available electronically to all support
customers on February 25th. DCE 1.0.3a is a complete release
of the DFS (Distributed File System) component of DCE. It
incorporates defect solutions and minor enhancements to the
component. (Please note: DCE release 1.0.3a is available only
to software support customers.)

OSF/1 1.2.2:
OSF/1 1.2.2 is now available for all full support customers.
It incorporates defect repairs made against the IK base, and
will pass all of the conformance and systems tests to the
same level as the 1.2 release.

OSF/1 1.3:
OSF/1 1.3 is an entirely new revision of OSF/1 and will be
made available at the end of June; support for
internationalization, 64 bit, elf, DCI, and threads is
included.

OSF/Motif 1.2.4:
OSF/Motif 1.2.4 was released during the week of April 4th;
all of the 1.2.3 regression defects were fixed. OSF/Motif
1.2.4 will build and run without modification on 64-bit
architectures, such as Crays and DEC-Alphas. This significant
new feature now allows developers using DEC-Alphas to work
with the latest versions of source from OSF.

OSF/Motif 2.0:
Even though OSF/Motif 2.0 has been officially designated a
full version release, OSF will be extending fee credits to
our OSF/Motif full support customers. These credits can be
used to offset the cost of upgrading to OSF/Motif *2.0.
