OSF ELECTRONIC FLASH

An electronic mail news flash for OSF Members from
the Open Software Foundation
April 19, 1994
You, as an OSF member, are specially invited to
participate in an exciting new program that would enable
you to add OSF expertise to your internal staff.
As you may have seen in recent industry press articles,
OSF has begun a program of changes to expand its
industry participation and update its business model.
Our efforts to expand industry participation have
already paid off, with our sponsorship having increased
considerably and further growth anticipated. Almost all
of the major open systems vendors are now OSF sponsors.
To increase our operational efficiency and enable more
concurrent technology projects, we are moving to a
project-oriented, out-sourcing business model. This is a
gradual transition in which each of our existing
technologies will transition to the new model upon
reaching its next major milestone point. The transition
will be completed by year end.
As we move to the new out-sourcing model, many talented
and highly skilled OSF engineering, operations and
administrative staff will be freed up and available for
new opportunities in the industry. Among those that will
become available over the next six months are
experienced technology architects and developers;
quality assurance, documentation, release and
integration engineers; marketers and writers
with expertise in Motif, OSF/1, DCE and DME.
To facilitate their ability to identify and move on to
new positions, OSF is hosting a series of Outplacement
Job Fairs at the OSF headquarters in Cambridge. As a
member of OSF, we are inviting you to participate in the
Job Fairs program, beginning on April 28, 1994. This is
an *excellent* opportunity for you to take advantage of
this pool of available talent and expertise to augment
your existing staff.
The Job Fairs program should be viewed as analogous to a
traditional college recruiting effort with delayed
availability, since the majority of our employees are
committed to completing current projects. Projects are
scheduled for completion in the June-July, September,
and December timeframes. As a condition of accepting our
invitation to participate, we must ask that you respect
our commitment to completing these projects. Each
employee is already aware of his/her availability date,
and will work with you on that basis.
We are planning a series of Job Fair events, however
space is limited. Therefore, we will follow the
following guidelines:
1. All sponsors and members of OSF are invited to
participate in any or all of the events.
2. Scheduled event dates will be announced via e-mail,
with the first being April 28, 1994. Interested
participants should respond to etchings@osf.org. Please
include an e-mail address to which employees may forward
resumes prior to the event.
3. We can accommodate 15 companies per event.
Reservations will be awarded on a first-come, first-
served basis.
4. Once the 15 participants are identified, we will
publish the appropriate contact information internally
to the OSF staff. Employees will act independently to
forward resumes and schedule meetings during the on-site
activities.
Additional information concerning the specifics of the
April 28 event will be published as soon as possible. If
you have any questions regarding the format or require
additional support, please feel free to contact Phil
Sheerin at 617-621-8788, or FAX to 617-621-8781, or e-
mail to sheerin@osf.org.
We greatly appreciate your support, and encourage your
participation in this unique and exciting Job Fairs
program.
