OSF Announces Progressive New Business Model
Broader Industry Participation Accelerates
Open Systems Delivery
The Open Software Foundation has announced a progressive
new business and operating model which includes new
technology processes and provides increased
opportunities for both end user and vendor
participation. Major systems vendors have joined
together in endorsing the new organizational structure
and business model as the focal point for promoting and
accelerating the delivery of open systems enabling
technologies.
In the newly-defined organization, emphasis shifts to a
more project-oriented operating model. Technology
projects will be separately funded and individually
managed multi-company development initiatives. This will
enable more concurrent technology projects, addressing
more customer-specific technology issues and
requirements on a much more timely basis.
"We are creating a new organizational model to enable
the widest possible industry support and participation,"
explained David Tory, OSF president and CEO. "Our goal
is to create the most efficient and cost-effective
vehicle for the accelerated delivery of open system
technology. We are delighted that our new structure and
development processes have already attracted many
influential and key industry players interested in
sponsoring the organization."
The new model's development process introduces the Pre-
Structured Technology, or PST, process. The PST process
is the successor to what has been widely known as the
"cose" process, taking the best elements of that process
and formalizing them within the OSF infrastructure.
Moving the "cose" process into an organizational
framework is a crucial step forward in uniting the
industry around a focal point for open systems.
A PST process project begins as an industry initiative
in which multiple companies collaborate in defining a
specific technology project, identifying an outside
third party to act as the prime engineering contractor,
and enlisting project sponsors to fund the project.
Once this pre-packaged project is proposed to and
approved by the OSF Board of Directors, the project is
launched.
The engineering for all future technology projects (both
RFTs and PSTs) will be performed by a designated third
party Prime Contractor, who may elect to subcontract
portions of work to other vendors or ISVs, but who will
be responsible for the technology delivery. Projects
will be managed through a Project Steering Committee,
consisting of OSF staff, a representative from each
project sponsor, and one representative selected by the
End User Steering Committee.
"This shift to an out-sourcing development model
capitalizes on existing pools of technical expertise,
eliminating costly and time-consuming ramp-up periods
and redundant engineering efforts," added Tory. "This
promotes more collaborative development efforts by
encouraging more companies to be directly involved with
technology projects. Another clear benefit, of course,
is faster time to market for more open systems products
at lower cost."
All constituencies represented in the OSF membership,
including end users and ISVs, will have the opportunity
to participate significantly in the technology evolution
process. Members participate by assisting in
requirements gathering and by influencing the future
directions and priorities for open systems technologies.
An Architecture Planning Council will be formed,
comprised of OSF staff, representatives from each of the
sponsor companies, and a representative of the end user
community selected by the End User Steering Committee.
The Council will maintain the technology roadmap, review
technology project proposals and make recommendations to
the Board. PST projects are approved on the basis of
their consistency with the open systems architectural
vision, and their support for interoperability,
portability and scalability.
In addition to a source code implementation, each
technology project will produce a specification which
will be made freely and publicly available. The
specification, along with test suites, will be submitted
to X/open, and other relevant industry standards bodies,
as appropriate.
Future enhancements to OSF's existing technologies,
including the OSF/Motif graphical user interface, the
OSF/1 open operating system, and the Distributed
Computing and Distributed Management Environments (DCE
and DME), will be transitioned to the new per-project
funding model upon completion of their current release
cycles. Projects are already "under construction" to
address the next releases of Motif and DCE and as well
as the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) work begun under
the auspices of the "cose" initiative.

OSF Announces New Certification Program For DCE
The Open Software Foundation announced a new
certification program for OSF's Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE). The goal of the program
is to demonstrate clearly that certified DCE-based
products are compliant with OSF specifications and
have achieved applications portability,
interoperability and consistency across multi-vendor
platforms.
"This program will allow users to specify and
purchase OSF DCE-based products with the confidence
that certified products have successfully completed
a series of rigorous tests to ensure
interoperability in a heterogeneous environment,"
said Joe Maloney, recently appointed OSF DCE
Business Area Manager.
To achieve the DCE certification seal, a product
must conform to the DCE APIs and protocols as well
as successfully perform practical interoperability
testing. The certification tests are based on the
DCE Validation Test Suite (VTS), a set of
interoperability tests and applications that
exercise the critical components of the DCE core
services - remote procedure call (RPC), Security,
Threads, and Directory and Time services.
As a first step toward DCE certification, a vendor
must acquire, port, and execute the DCE Validation
Test Suite and submit the results to OSF. The second
step is to participate in the OSF Interoperability
Festival (I-FEST 94), on April 11 to April 22. I-
FEST is a continuation of the program begun last
year in conjunction with Challenge '93. This year's
I-FEST, a pre-requisite for DCE certification,
includes a set of enhanced and expanded tests for
DCE interoperability. During the I-FEST testing
period, all participants will be required to test
their implementations bilaterally against each of
the other participants' platforms. The testing must
include a machine of an Endian type different from
the platform being certified, should demonstrate
interoperability across different platforms and
architectures, and should include UNIX and non-UNIX
platforms. Vendors participating in the DCE
Certification program include AT&T Global
Information Solutions, Digital, Hewlett-Packard,
Hitachi, IBM, SCO, and Transarc.
Vendors successfully completing the certification
program will take part in OSF DCE Showcase
Exhibitions around the world. The DCE Showcase is a
multi-vendor interoperability demonstration
featuring certified DCE-based platforms, development
tools, and applications. It is held in conjunction
with the various Networld+Interop 94 Exhibitions to
be held in Las Vegas, Berlin, Paris, and Tokyo
throughout 1994.

OSF Announces New DCE Beta Test Program
New Source Code Beta Program To Expedite Time To
Market
The Open Software Foundation has announced the
Source Code Beta Test Program for the next release
of the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE),
Release 1.1.
The objective of the Source Code Beta Test Program
is to offer OSF DCE licensees early access to the
DCE 1.1 code. This allows beta program participants
an early beginning to their productization efforts
for the next version of DCE, expediting rapid
availability of products to the marketplace.
Participation in the beta program is open to all
licensees of the current version of DCE, Release
1.0.who are also DCE support subscribers.
A further benefit of the beta program will come
from the opportunity for OSF and the licensees to
work together to review and improve the quality of
the release before final shipment. Participants are
expected to make a commitment to active involvement
in achieving the objectives of the program.
"The Source Code Beta Test Program is not intended
to be merely an early look at the technology," said
Joe Maloney, newly appointed Business Area Manager
for DCE. "Through participation in the source code
beta program, those working with the DCE beta
source code can provide feedback on the quality of
the code, tests, and documentation," continued
Maloney. "The feedback received during this phase
of the development project will help OSF to ensure
the quality of the final release."
The DCE Source Code Beta Test Program will start in
mid-May and continue three months. Final shipment
of DCE Release 1.1 is scheduled for end of 1994.
There are no special fees required to participate
in the beta program except those necessary to meet
the requirements of being a DCE 1.0 licensee with
full support.

New DCE Product Catalog
The DCE Product Catalog has proven to be quite valuable
as a tool for making DCE acquisitions. It is the single
source for information on which vendors are offering DCE
products, applications, and services. Today, it contains
over 70 mainframe, desktop and workstation offerings, as
well as relational databases, OLTP systems, and
development tools.
The new revision, sheduled for May this year will
indicate the momentum behind the DCE technology. It will
focus heavily on applications and tools which round out
the DCE solution. The product catalog will also reflect
a major milestone in the DCE lifecycle -- the
availability of "DCE Certified" systems that OSF will
highlight in the catalog and demonstrate at the upcoming

Distributed Management Environment (DME) Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
DME at Uniforum
DME was featured in two panel sessions and was
demonstrated as part of OSF's Interoperability Showcase
at UniForum '94, held March 23-25 in San Francisco.
There were three separate demonstrations which
highlighted both the DME Services and the DME NMO, each
of which generated a great deal of interest:
Hewlett-Packard's NMO Demo
The HP demo featured the NMO in DME. The NMO technology
is a central part of HP's OpenView Distributed
Management Platform, which uses the NMO as an important
part of its communication infrastructure to access
standard industry protocols such as CMIP and SNMP.
The Groupe Bull DME NMO Demo
Bull Worldwide Information Systems demonstrated its
Integrated System Management (ISM) platform using DME's
NMO. In ISM, applications see network management
information described as ISO/OSI objects. NMO is the
central portion of the ISM/Manager platform architecture
and provides the switching functions and communications
paths between the various components.
OSF Services Demo
This OSF demonstration was a series of DME applications
which highlighted the key functionality provided by the
services in this technology, including: software
installation (SDS), subsystem startup and shutdown
(SMS), software license management (LMS), and event
management (EVS).

Sun OS 4.1.2, and an Intel 486 architecture system
running OSF/1 1.2.
New PSTs Underway for OSF/Motif & CDE
A number of OSF sponsors are preparing to sponsor the
coordinated evolution of the Common Desktop Environment
(CDE) and OSF/Motif(R) using the new Pre-Structured
Technology (PST) process of the Open Software
Foundation. This process allows OSF to evaluate and
accept various proposals from the industry for the
inclusion of new or follow-up releases of OSF
technologies.
The OSF/Motif 2.0 release will be completed this summer
as planned. After the release of OSF/Motif 2.0,
additional releases of OSF/Motif are expected to be
funded under the new PST project sponsor model.
These and related topics will be covered at the upcoming
UEC SIG and Member meetings
OSF Ships OSF/Motif Release 1.2.4
OSF shipped its patch release 1.2.4 of OSF/Motif on
April 1. If you are currently a support customer and
have not received your copy of the release, please
contact direct@osf.org. If you are not an OSF/Motif
Support customer and wish to obtain information on OSF's
support programs, you are invited to send email to
direct@osf.org.
OSF/Motif Release 1.2.4 contains source code addressing
bugs reported against versions through 1.2.3. All
together, approximately 240 bug fixes for Motif 1.2 are
included which resolves about 330 CRs. As with all patch
releases, files are included which define all of the CRs
closed, bug fixes and outstanding CRs at the time of
productization.
OSF/Motif 1.2.4 has been made 64-bit clean using the DEC
Alpha OSF/1 V 1.3 as the text platform. Reference
platforms for R 1.2.4 include the HP 9000/720 running
HP/UX 9.01 and an Intel 486 workstation running OSF/1 R
1.2. Since this is a general availability product
release, it has undergone the full quality assurance
cycle at OSF. This patch release requires one to already
have an existing OSF/Motif 1.2 source tree, updated with
the Motif 1.2.1, 1.2.2 and 1.2.3 patch releases.

(See SIG Update)
OSF/Motif at Uniforum
Last month in San Francisco, OSF hosted two booths, one
dedicated to the OSF DCE Showcase, and the other for the
OSF/1 and OSF/Motif showcase. OSF made several
announcements at the show regarding its new corporate
changes, additions of new sponsors, and the "PST"
(Prestructured Technology) process which will allow OSF
to broaden its ability in providing technologies under a
collaborative development process with OSF members and
contractors. The next releases of OSF/Motif and the CDE
are prime candidates for the PST process in 1994
following the completion of Motif 2.0. In fact, a PSTs
is in construction for these technologies with several
letters-of-intent already signed. If you'd like to know
more about the OSF/Motif and CDE PST, please send email
to betz@osf.org.
The show was well attended and many "conventioneers"
dropped by to see several OSF "guests" who were
demonstrating their OSF/Motif based product. IXI from
England demonstrated Wintif, which gives Motif
applications running on UNIX the appearance and behavior
of Microsoft Windows. AGE Logic exhibited Xofthost for
Windows NT. XoftHost for Windows NT is an OSF/Motif and
X Window System standard development environment for the
Microssoft Windows NT operating system that simplify
porting and developing X/Motif applications on Intel-
based PCs running Windows NT. Alsys demonstrated TeleUSE
Release 3.0 which provides an array of development tools
for interactively designing and building object-oriented
OSF/Motif GUI applications.

Job Fair Announcement
OSF members are specially invited to participate in an
exciting new program that would enable you to add OSF
expertise to your internal staff.
As you may have seen in recent industry press articles,
OSF has begun a program of changes to expand its
industry participation and update its business model.
Our efforts to expand industry participation have
already paid off, with our sponsorship having increased
considerably and further growth anticipated. Almost all
of the major open systems vendors are now OSF sponsors.
To increase our operational efficiency and enable a
greater number of concurrent technology projects, we are
moving to a project-oriented, out-sourcing business
model. This is a gradual transition in which each of our
existing technologies will transition to the new model
upon reaching its next major milestone point. The
transition will be completed by year end.
As we move to the new out-sourcing model, many talented
and highly skilled OSF engineering, operations and
administrative staff will be freed up and available for
new opportunities in the industry. Among those that will
become available over the next six months are
experienced technology architects and developers;
quality assurance, documentation, release and
integration engineers; marketers and writers
with expertise in OSF/Motif, OSF/1, DCE and DME.
To facilitate their ability to identify and move on to
new positions, OSF is hosting a series of Outplacement
Job Fairs at the OSF headquarters in Cambridge. As a
member of OSF, we are inviting you to participate in the
Job Fairs program, beginning on April 28, 1994. This is
an *excellent* opportunity for you to take advantage of
this pool of available talent and expertise to augment
your existing staff.
The Job Fairs program should be viewed as analogous to a
traditional college recruiting effort with delayed
availability, since the majority of our employees are
committed to completing current projects. Projects are
scheduled for completion in the June-July, September,
and December timeframes. As a condition of accepting our
invitation to participate, we must ask that you respect
our commitment to completing these projects. Each
employee is already aware of his/her availability date,
and will work with you on that
basis.
We are planning a series of Job Fair events, however,
space is limited. Therefore, we will follow the
following guidelines:
1. All sponsors and members of OSF are invited to
participate in any or all of the events.
2. Scheduled event dates will be announced via e-mail,
with the first being April 28, 1994. Interested
participants should respond to etchings@osf.org. Please
include an e-mail address to which employees may forward
resumes prior to the event.
3. We can accommodate 15 companies per event.
Reservations will be awarded on a first-come, first-
served basis.
4. Once the 15 participants are identified, we will
publish the appropriate contact information internally
to the OSF staff. Employees will act independently to
forward resumes and schedule meetings during the on-site
activities.
Additional information concerning the specifics of the
April 28 event will be published as soon as possible. If
you have any questions regarding the format or require
additional support, please feel free to contact Phil
Sheerin at (617)-621-8788, or FAX to (617)-621-8781, or
e-mail to sheerin@osf.org.
We greatly appreciate your support, and encourage your
participation in this unique and exciting Job Fairs
program.
