BCR OFFERS "The Internet: a Practical Introduction for
Librarians"
The Bibliographical Center for Research (BCR) in Denver,
a five-state, non-profit, library cooperative network, is
offering a series of hands-on Internet workshops in
Colorado, Utah, Kansas, and Iowa.
The following full day agenda will be followed:
I. Internet: Introduction
A. The Internet: What it is, What it isn't
B. Brief history and future: ARPAnet to NREN
C. Ethics & Etiquette
II. Telnet (Remote Login)
A. Telnet on the Internet
1. Library Catalogs
2. Online Services
B. Finding Library Catalogs: HYTELNET
III. Basic UNIX for Internet Travellers
A. UNIX, What is it, Why you care
B. Basic UNIX Commands
IV. File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
A. Using FTP
B. Using Archie to Find File Locations
C. Using XMODEM or Kermit to Download FTP'd Files
D. File Compression
V. Electronic Mail
A. Mail Programs & Editors
B. Addressing Electronic Mail
VI. Computer Conferencing
A. BITNET Mailing Lists
B. Internet Mailing Lists
C. USENET Newsgroups
Each class is limited to 8-10 attendees and held from
9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The cost is $85 for BCR members
and $110 for non-members. A $10 discount for early
registration is available. Connee Chandler, BCR's
Manager of Reference Systems & Services, is the
