Some may have noticed on page A13 of the July 29 _Chronicle of Higher
Education_ the Online column devoting itself to the Kehoe/Tyckoson debate
about whether or not the paper publication of Brendan's _Zen_ is the
"beginning of the end..." or not. It gives coverage to quotes from
both Brendan and David, giving their full names and affiliations. It says
there was "a spirited exchange this month on the global network". It does
NOT, however, give any citation to the source of the communications,
which list(s) carried it, or any other information that would enable an
interested reader to follow up on it. From the information in the
article, one would simply have to contact either of the gentlemen quoted
or perhaps the publisher of the book. It also illustrates that messages
ARE quoted in the "traditional media", and quoted just as they are written,
warts and all.
I hope the participants (Tyckoson, Kehoe, and The Chronicle) will all
inform us on whether the quoted authors were contacted before publication,
why the Chronicle didn't give a citation to the information, and so forth.
I have no objection to anything I write being quoted, but also expect the
courtesy of being asked before electronic or print quotation.
