License Agreements for Print Products?

Recently, I have been considering the consequences of libraries
having to manage a growing number of license agreements. A dozen
agreements is one thing; 100, 1,000, 10,000, or more is another. Now
we have relatively few electronic products, but in the future we will
have many more. How well does the current license system "scale up"?
While pondering these thoughts, I read No. 41 of the Newsletter on
Serials Pricing Issues. There is a note from Dorothy Kanter that says
that the AMA is requiring a license agreement for the 33rd edition
of the AMA Directory. Among the provisions: "Licensee may not
copy . . . any DOP information . . ." and ". . . DOP shall be designated
as reference texts only and Licensee will not circulate DOP; and
that DOP shall not leave the Licensee's facility or be part of
any interlibrary loan program . . ." While this is a reference
work, nothing stops publishers from creating similar licenses for
other kinds of books. Nothing, that is, except no market demand
for such works.
Licenses for print products? Interesting idea. How well do you like
it?
